
Skeleton Watches: Engineering As Ornament
Bell & Ross’s BR-X1 Skeleton Tourbillon, unveiled in 2015 with a case machined from grade 5 titanium and a movement cut down to its structural minimum, looked like someone had taken a chainsaw to a perfectly good watch and called it art. It wasn’t the first skeleton watch by a long shot — the technique is nearly as old as the pocket watch itself — but it captured something the format has always chased: making the machinery the whole point, instead of hiding it.
A technique older than the wristwatch
Skeletonization dates to 18th-century France, where watchmakers including André-Charles Caron began cutting away material from movement plates and bridges purely to put the gear train on display, decades before wristwatches existed. Vacheron Constantin and other historic manufactures produced openworked pocket watches through the 1800s as showcases of technical bravado — proof a watchmaker’s hand-finishing was flawless enough to survive public scrutiny with nowhere left to hide. That same logic still drives skeleton watchmaking today: a skeletonized movement has nowhere to conceal a rough edge or a lazy bevel.

How a movement actually gets skeletonized
Turning a solid movement into a skeleton means removing as much metal from the bridges, plates, and mainplate as possible while leaving enough structure to keep the gear train rigid and accurately positioned. Watchmakers cut, file, and polish each remaining strut by hand, often applying the same anglage and black polishing used on a movement’s finest components, because every edge is now visible from the front. Get the material removal wrong and the movement flexes under the stress of winding or shock, throwing off timekeeping — which is why a well-executed skeleton costs real engineering time, not just a different dial.
Full skeleton vs. openworked
The two terms get used loosely, but they describe different amounts of commitment. A full skeleton watch, like Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Ultra Thin Skeleton, opens the movement from front to back so light passes straight through the case. An openworked watch, such as Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Openworked ref. 15305ST, removes material from the dial side and bridges without necessarily achieving that see-through effect, keeping a solid caseback or more structure intact. Both fall under the skeleton umbrella in marketing copy, but a full skeleton is the harder, and generally pricier, achievement.
The engineering trade-off
Cutting away metal is easy; keeping the watch accurate afterward is the hard part. A skeletonized mainplate loses rigidity, so watchmakers compensate with strategic bridge placement, harder alloys, or by skeletonizing only movements originally engineered with enough over-built strength to survive the cuts. Tourbillon skeletons, like Cartier’s various Rotonde Skeleton models, push this furthest, openworking a movement that already has a rotating cage exposed at 6 o’clock, leaving almost nothing solid between the wearer’s eye and the escapement doing the actual timekeeping.
Where the price range actually splits
A skeleton dial can appear on a $300 automatic just as easily as a $300,000 tourbillon, and the difference is entirely in execution. Entry-level skeleton watches from brands like Orient or Seiko Presage typically use a movement that was mass-produced solid, then cut by machine with minimal hand-finishing, showing visible tool marks up close. High-end examples from Patek Philippe’s Calatrava Skeleton or Roger Dubuis’s Excalibur line hand-finish every strut and often skeletonize a movement never intended to be solid in the first place, built from the ground up for maximum openness without sacrificing rigidity.

What to check before buying one
Look closely at the edges of the bridges under strong light. Hand-finished anglage shows crisp, mirror-polished angles where two surfaces meet at a precise line; machine-cut skeleton work often leaves rounded, slightly uneven edges instead. Also check whether the “skeleton” is the actual movement or a solid movement hidden under an openworked dial disc designed to look skeletonized from the front — a distinction budget models sometimes blur, and one worth understanding before paying a premium for what should be a fully see-through mechanism.
Why collectors keep coming back to them
Beyond the engineering argument, a skeleton watch appeals to something more basic: the same instinct that makes people watch a mechanic work on an engine with the hood up. Richard Mille built an entire brand identity around this idea, designing cases specifically to expose a tonneau-shaped movement rather than skeletonizing a round one after the fact, treating the mechanism itself as the design rather than a component to be hidden. A Zenith El Primero Skeleton or a Panerai Lo Scienziato does the same thing at very different price points — turning a functional necessity, the gear train that actually keeps time, into the entire visual identity of the watch. It’s a format that rewards close inspection in a way a solid dial never can.
