
Why Watches Use Sapphire Crystal (and What It Costs)
The Omega Speedmaster Professional was the first watch on the moon, but its Hesalite crystal scratched like hell during training, and those little scuffs bothered astronauts more than they admitted at the time. That’s precisely why modern moonwatches—and nearly every serious mechanical watch made today—use sapphire crystal instead. It’s harder, clearer, and it wears better. But it’s not glass, it’s not inexpensive, and it has one weakness that catches people off guard.
What Sapphire Crystal Actually Is
Sapphire crystal isn’t mined from the ground or harvested from gemstones. It’s lab-grown aluminum oxide (corundum), manufactured through a process called the Czochralski method. A seed crystal of sapphire is slowly pulled upward from a crucible of molten aluminum oxide, growing the crystal atom by atom into a boule—a solid cylinder of pure sapphire. It takes hours to grow, then it’s cut, shaped, and polished to watch specifications. That process sounds expensive because it is, but it’s not hand-work; it’s repeatable industrial chemistry.
The hardness is what makes it valuable. Sapphire scores 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, just below diamonds at 10. That means everyday scratches—keys in a pocket, accidental contact with furniture, even drops onto concrete—won’t mark it. A Rolex Submariner ref. 16610 from the 1990s with a sapphire crystal, if cared for at all, will have a crystal that looks nearly as clear as the day it left the factory. A Seiko SKX007 with a Hardlex crystal, exposed to the same conditions, will look like you’ve been using it to scrub sand off boat hulls.

The comparison matters because it shapes how you use and perceive the watch. Hesalite (acrylic) was what Omega used on the original Speedmasters, and astronauts accepted the scratches as a sign of use. But on a $10,000 dress watch or a $100,000 yacht timer, scratches feel like damage. Sapphire prevents that feeling. It’s not vanity—it’s letting the watch do its job without the wearer obsessing over cosmetic degradation.
How Rolex Made Sapphire Standard
Rolex began using sapphire crystal in 1957 on the Day-Date (also called the “President”), one of the first luxury watches to adopt it. By the 1960s, they’d switched most of their sports watches to sapphire as well. The move was partly technical (they wanted surfaces that lasted), partly marketing (sapphire sounded better than acrylic), and partly defensive (if a competitor used sapphire, Rolex couldn’t be seen as cheap).
But Rolex’s real innovation wasn’t discovering sapphire—it was making it standard at that price point. Before the 1960s, sapphire was reserved for high complications or dress watches. Rolex made the argument that a functional sports watch deserved it too. By the 1980s, using anything less than sapphire on a watch above $5,000 felt cheap. That standard has held for 40+ years.
Today, if you’re buying a new mechanical watch above $3,000, sapphire is so normal you probably won’t even notice it listed in the specs. If it’s not there, that’s a red flag. Brands still using mineral glass or Hardlex at that price point are either cutting corners or targeting markets with different expectations—typically cheaper brands selling fashion watches where durability is secondary to style.
The Anti-Reflective Problem
Sapphire has one vulnerability that catches owners off guard: it’s completely transparent to fingerprints and dust. Early sapphire crystals on Rolex and Omega watches reflected light internally, creating a subtle glare if you looked at the watch in bright sunlight. It was barely noticeable, but it was there.
Modern sapphire crystals have anti-reflective (AR) coatings applied to one or both sides. This coating—usually a multi-layer vacuum-deposited treatment—reduces glare and makes the dial look sharper and more legible. It’s a huge improvement. But AR coatings aren’t impervious. They can scratch, peel, or wear away with time and use. A 10-year-old Rolex Submariner with an original AR-coated sapphire crystal might show haze or cloudiness in the coating, not in the crystal itself. That’s cosmetic, but it’s visible.
The trade-off is worth it—most people would rather deal with AR coating degradation than live with glare—but it’s worth knowing about. When buying a pre-owned watch with an sapphire crystal, ask about the crystal’s condition and age. If it’s the original crystal and the watch is 20+ years old, there’s a decent chance the coating is worn. Replacing the crystal costs $150–$400 depending on the brand and case size.
Why It Costs More (And Why That’s Justified)
A sapphire crystal blank costs manufacturers roughly $20–$50, depending on the diameter and thickness. That’s not insignificant for a component. A Hardlex or mineral glass crystal might cost $2–$5. The difference isn’t just material; it’s the time spent growing the crystal, cutting it, polishing it, applying coatings, and quality-checking every single one.
For the brand, that cost gets factored into the MSRP. A Rolex Submariner with sapphire costs significantly more than a Seiko SKX007 with Hardlex, but some of that premium is justified by the material. You’re also paying for Rolex’s reputation, their marketing, their warranty, and their profit margin. But the sapphire isn’t a markup—it’s a real cost.
Secondary market prices reflect this durability. A 20-year-old Rolex Submariner, even with scratches on the case, will command strong prices largely because the crystal still looks new. A 20-year-old Seiko with a scratched Hardlex crystal feels damaged, even if the movement is perfect. That’s why collectors prize sapphire: it buys you decades of looking good.
The Exceptions
Not every watch needs sapphire. A daily-wear beater watch—a Casio Edifice, a Timex Weekender, a Vostok—might not warrant the upgrade. You’re going to bash it around anyway, and replacement costs money. For watches under $500 designed to take damage, simpler crystals make sense.
Vintage watches present a different question. A 1960s Rolex Submariner ref. 5512 with the original Acrylic crystal is more historically correct and valuable than one that’s been retrofitted with sapphire. That’s why collectors preserve them. If you own a vintage piece, don’t replace the crystal unless it’s damaged beyond use. The original material is part of the watch’s identity.
And some brands—notably Omega on the Seamaster Diver 300M—offer both options. You can buy with sapphire (standard) or special-order with Hesalite if you prefer the vintage aesthetic or specific light transmission properties. That choice doesn’t exist on Rolex, which switched completely to sapphire decades ago and never looked back.
What This Means for Your Buying Decision
If you’re buying a watch new, sapphire crystal should be a given expectation above $2,500. Below that, it depends on the brand and category. A fashion watch doesn’t need it. A serious mechanical watch does.
If you’re buying used, inspect the crystal carefully. A crystal that’s completely clear with maybe a few tiny scratches is a huge plus—it means the watch was either carefully maintained or barely worn. A crystal that’s hazy, has large scratches, or shows AR coating degradation is a minus, but not disqualifying. Budget $200–$300 for a professional replacement if needed.
And understand the practical advantage: a sapphire crystal is an investment in not having to care. It lets you wear the watch without thinking about it. That’s not a small thing.
