How To Wind An Automatic Watch (Without Breaking It)


Pick up a Seiko SKX007 on a Friday afternoon and remove it from your wrist. By Tuesday morning—approximately 72 hours later—it’s stopped completely. The mechanism has run down, the mainspring has released all its energy, and the watch has become nothing more than an ornament. This is automatic watch ownership. The movement won’t wind itself without your wrist, and if you don’t wear it or manually wind it, it stops. Understanding the mechanics of winding, when to do it, and how much stress a crown can take is the difference between a well-maintained movement and a prematurely worn one.

The Rotor: How Automatics Actually Self-Wind

An automatic movement contains a rotor—a semi-circular or full-circular weight, usually made of brass or tungsten, that swings freely on a bearing. As you move your wrist, gravity and inertia cause this rotor to rotate. The rotor is mechanically connected to a series of gears that wind the mainspring. This is efficient. A rotor in continuous motion can keep a mainspring topped up throughout the day. A Rolex Submariner ref. 16610 with normal wrist motion will maintain a full power reserve with perhaps two to three hours of wrist time per day. An Omega Seamaster Professional, despite its thicker rotor, operates on similar principles.

But the rotor can only do so much. Stop moving, and the spring begins to unwind. A Seiko SKX007 has roughly a 40-hour power reserve from a fully wound state. A Rolex Submariner is rated at 48 hours. An older Seiko 5 from the 1970s might claim only 36 hours. These numbers are measured in laboratory conditions—wrist motion completely stopped, temperature constant, no shock. In real life, power reserves are slightly shorter because movement is never entirely still.

The mainspring itself stores the energy. Imagine a flat steel ribbon, tightly coiled inside the barrel of the movement. As the rotor winds it, the coil gets tighter. The spring tries to unwind, and that unwinding motion drives the gears, escapement, and balance wheel. The rotor can wind only so much before it reaches maximum tension. This is where the slip clutch comes in.

The Slip Clutch: Your Guardian Against Over-Winding

A slip clutch is a mechanical failsafe designed to prevent you from over-winding a mainspring. When the spring reaches maximum tension, the clutch mechanically disengages the rotor from the winding mechanism. Further rotation of the rotor spins freely without winding the spring further. This is almost universal in modern automatics. Nearly every watch manufactured after 1990 has a slip clutch.

This wasn’t always the case. Vintage Rolex Submariners from the 1960s, Omega Seamasters from the same era, and Patek Philippe Calatrava movements didn’t have slip clutches. They could theoretically be over-wound. In practice, over-winding is rare because the act of winding develops increasing resistance. You feel it and stop.

The presence of a slip clutch means you can wind a modern watch for as long as you like, and you won’t break it through winding alone. This is reassuring. It means manual winding is forgiving.

How to Manually Wind: The Correct Technique

Remove the watch from your wrist. Holding it firmly in one hand, use the other hand to pull out the crown one position. On most watches—especially Rolex and Tudor—the crown pulls out one click. This engages the manual winding mechanism. The rotor disengages, and the crown now directly winds the mainspring.

Turn the crown slowly and steadily. Aim for one full rotation per second—about 60 rotations per minute. This pace is gentle on the movement. You’re not trying to wind the watch as quickly as possible. You’re winding it consistently. Count as you turn. Most watches need 20–40 rotations to reach a full power reserve from a stopped state. The Rolex Submariner typically requires 30–35 rotations. The Seiko SKX needs perhaps 30–40. The Omega Seamaster, depending on the caliber, might need 35–45.

You’ll feel the resistance increase as the spring winds tighter. This is normal. Keep winding until you encounter noticeable resistance—not grinding, just solid resistance. This indicates the mainspring is approaching its maximum tension. Stop at this point. You’re done. Push the crown back in completely and rotate it to screw it down if it’s a screw-down crown.

Never wind a watch while wearing it. The act of winding puts stress on the crown stem. If the watch is on your wrist, your wrist movement adds unpredictable forces to the stem. Over time, this can cause the stem to bend or the crown to strip. Always remove the watch first.

Power Reserves: What the Numbers Actually Mean

A watch’s power reserve is stated in hours—48, 50, 60, sometimes much higher. This is the duration the mainspring will power the watch if the movement is static. It’s not a guarantee of how long the watch will run if you stop wearing it, because mainsprings deliver less power as they unwind. A Rolex Submariner rated at 48 hours will actually stop slightly before the 48-hour mark because the spring’s ability to drive the escapement diminishes as it weakens.

The practical implication: if you remove your Submariner on Friday evening and put it back on Monday morning (approximately 63 hours), it will be stopped. You’ll need to wind it. A watch with a 60-hour power reserve gives you more grace—it might still be running on Monday morning. This is why collectors and frequent travelers often prefer watches with long power reserves. The Rolex Day-Date with its 48 hours is adequate. The Omega Seamaster with 60 hours is better if you’re the type to skip weekends.

Winding Schedules for Multiple Watches

If you own a single automatic watch and wear it daily, winding is optional. Your wrist does it automatically. But if you own multiple watches and rotate them, a winding schedule prevents frustration. Establish a routine. Monday morning, wind and set the vintage Seiko 5. Wednesday, wind the Tudor Pelagos. Friday, the Rolex Submariner. This ensures each watch in your collection is always wound and ready to wear.

Even if you have a watch winder, hand-winding periodically is worthwhile. It’s a tactile connection to the mechanism. You’ll notice if a crown develops resistance, if the winding feels different, or if a watch’s power reserve seems shortened—all early warning signs of maintenance needs.

The Ritual of Winding

There’s something deliberate and meditative about winding a watch. It forces a pause. You hold the watch in your hand, feel its weight, watch the second hand move as you wind. You notice details—the finish of the case, the proportions of the dial, the quality of the lume on the hands. Collectors often describe winding as a moment of genuine connection with their watches. In a world of battery-powered convenience, hand-winding an automatic is a small act of intentional mechanical engagement.
