The Omega Speedmaster Is a Racing Watch That Went to the Moon

The Omega Speedmaster Professional “Moonwatch” is the most recognizable name in watch history that isn’t a Rolex Submariner. It’s not the most expensive watch Omega makes, and it’s not the most complicated. But it has a story that no other watch can claim: it was the first watch worn on the moon, and it earned that status through a process that was part design competition, part NASA engineering requirement, and part historical accident.

The Moonwatch name isn’t marketing. It’s literal — Omega Speedmaster Professional watches were worn on the lunar surface during the Apollo missions. That fact has made the Speedmaster one of the most collected watches in history, and it also means that the watch you buy today is a direct descendant of something that went to space. That matters.

The Speedmaster’s Origins: Racing, Not Space

When Omega launched the Speedmaster in 1957, it was designed as a chronograph for racing drivers. The name says it — speed. The original Speedmaster had a 42mm case, a tachymeter bezel for measuring speed over distance, and a calibre 321 movement that was one of the thinnest manual-wind chronograph movements in production at the time. The design was clean, legible, and built for function over fashion.

The 321 movement is worth knowing because it’s the heart of the vintage Speedmaster story. The 321 was designed by an independent watchmaking company called La Movements, and Omega used it in the Speedmaster from 1957 until the early 1960s. The 321 is now one of the most collectible watch movements in existence — thin, elegant, and made at a time when Omega was building its reputation as a professional watchmaker, not just a brand.

How the Speedmaster Became the Moonwatch

Before the Speedmaster went to the moon, Omega had to win a competition. In the early 1960s, NASA was looking for a watch that could be worn by astronauts during missions. Requirements included: readable at a glance, resistant to vibration, able to function in a vacuum, and capable of surviving extreme temperatures. Several brands submitted watches. Omega’s Speedmaster passed the testing that others didn’t.

The Speedmaster’s particular advantages were the chronograph function (useful for timing mission events), the legibility of the black dial with white subdials, and the strength of the manual-wind Calibre 861 (a successor to the 321) that could handle the physical demands of space travel better than some of the automatic movements submitted by other brands.

In 1965, Ed White became the first American to walk in space wearing a Speedmaster. In 1969, during Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore Speedmaster Professional watches on the lunar surface. The watch that Armstrong wore is now in a museum. The model it belonged to — the Speedmaster Professional ref. 145.012 — became the definition of the Moonwatch.

The Speedmaster Professional Design

The modern Speedmaster Professional “Moonwatch” retains much of the original design logic. A black dial with three white subdials and a small seconds indicator at 9 o’clock, a central chronograph hand, a tachymeter scale on the bezel, and a manual-wind movement. The case is 42mm, which is still a manageable size today. The bezel is aluminum, not metal — that’s a deliberate choice that traces back to the original design, where a rotating bezel made of metal would have been heavier and potentially less legible.

The Moonwatch’s design is so stable that it’s become a classic in the true sense — the watch hasn’t needed to change to stay relevant because the original design was right. That’s rare. Most watches from the 1950s that are still in production today have been updated at least subtly. The Speedmaster Professional has not. That’s a testament to the quality of the original design and the brand’s discipline in not messing with it.

What’s Inside: The Movements

The Moonwatch has used several different movements over the years. The original Calibre 321 was replaced by the Calibre 861, which was itself updated over time. Today’s Speedmaster Professional uses the Calibre 1861, a manual-wind movement that’s based on the 861 but with a more modern manufacturing process. It’s not the most sophisticated movement Omega makes — that would be the Co-Axial movements used in the Seamaster line — but it’s a workhorse manual-wind chronograph that’s proven itself over decades.

Omega also offers an automatic Speedmaster, the Speedmaster Mark II and the newer Speedmaster Planet Ocean, but the “Moonwatch” name belongs to the manual-wind Professional. That’s part of the watch’s appeal — it’s a mechanical watch that doesn’t come with a battery, and winding it by hand is part of the ritual that connects the wearer to the history.

Speedmaster Variants Worth Knowing

Not every Speedmaster is a Moonwatch. Omega’s Speedmaster family includes:

  • The Speedmaster Professional “Moonwatch” — the manual-wind chronograph with the black dial, the only one that officially earned the NASA certification and the moon-worn heritage.
  • The Speedmaster Mark II — a later model with a more refined case, an automatic movement, and a different dial. Collectors like it, but it’s not what the fuss is about.
  • The Speedmaster ’57 — a retro-styled model inspired by the original 1957 Speedmaster, with a lighter case and a cleaner look. It’s a modern watch built to evoke an older one.
  • The Speedmaster Skywalker — a model developed in collaboration with astronauts, with a GMT function and a different aesthetic.

For someone buying their first Speedmaster, the Professional Moonwatch is the one that carries the history. The others are good watches, but they’re not the story.

Collecting the Speedmaster Today

A vintage Speedmaster from the 1960s with a Calibre 321 is a significant purchase. These watches are collectible, condition-sensitive, and often expensive. A vintage Speedmaster with a 321 movement in good condition can command high prices, and the spaceship connection adds a premium. But the modern Speedmaster Professional is accessible — Omega has kept the price reasonable relative to the watch’s heritage, and the watch is widely available in authorized dealers.

The key thing for a buyer to understand is that the Moonwatch is not an investment vehicle. It’s a watch with a story that happens to hold its value well. That’s a good thing. Hunting for a vintage Moonwatch as a speculative asset is a different game, and it’s not one that Omega designed the watch to play.

The Moonwatch is what it has always been: a racing chronograph that went to the moon and kept going. That’s a story most watches don’t have, and it’s the reason the Speedmaster remains one of the most recommended first luxury watches for anyone interested in history.
