In 1961, a blindfolded blind flight instructor and former World War II pilot named Helmut Sinn founded a small company in Frankfurt am Main. He did not care about polished bevels, Geneva stripes, or marketing fairy tales about heritage. He built cockpit clocks and pilot chronographs for professional use, selling them directly to pilots to cut out retail markups. Before Helmut Sinn ever put a chronograph on a pilot’s wrist, he supplied navigation clocks to the German military and civilian aviation markets. His early catalog featured surplus Heuer stopwatches and dashboard instruments he modified for cockpit use. Under his watch, Sinn stopped being just a maker of affordable pilot chronographs and transformed into a laboratory for extreme durability. The air trapped inside a watch case compresses against the crystal, and external pressure can eventually shatter it. Sinn solved this by filling the entire watch case with a transparent fluorinated oil. Because liquids cannot be compressed, the watch achieves absolute pressure resistance at any depth, limited only by human survival limits.

The visual result is bizarre and brilliant. When you tilt a Hydro model like the Sinn UX, the dial appears completely flat against the sapphire crystal. There is zero refraction, meaning you can read the time from a ninety-degree angle underwater without distortion. The oil also prevents any internal fogging, regardless of temperature swings. The catch is that mechanical movements cannot run submerged in dense oil due to friction, so Sinn pairs Hydro technology with high-grade ETA or Ronda thermo-compensated quartz movements. The battery changes require sending the watch back to Frankfurt for a factory service, but for true instrument nerds, the sacrifice is worth it.

Submarine Steel and Tegiment Hardening

If you collect Rolex Submariners or Omega Seamasters, you are used to 316L stainless steel. It is a reliable alloy, but it scratches easily and can react to saltwater over decades. Sinn solved this by sourcing actual submarine steel for their diving watches, specifically the steel used in the outer hulls of the German Navy Class 212 submarines. This material, certified by Germanischer Lloyd, offers extreme salt-water resistance and anti-magnetic properties without needing a soft-iron Faraday cage inside.

The Advantage of German Submarine Steel

The steel used in the Sinn U1 and U2 models is so tough that standard watchmaking machinery struggles to machine it. It resists corrosion better than traditional 316L and has a distinct, industrial grey matte finish. When paired with Sinn’s proprietary Tegiment technology, the steel becomes nearly impervious to daily wear. Tegiment is not a coating like PVD or DLC. Instead, it is a surface-hardening process that diffuses carbon into the outer layer of the steel, increasing the Vickers hardness from around 220 HV for standard steel to roughly 1200 HV. Ar-Dehumidifying Technology and Copper Sulfate Capsules

Sinn addressed this with their Ar-Dehumidifying technology, which combines three distinct elements. First, the case is filled with protective argon gas, which is chemically inert and lacks oxygen. Second, a small diffusion capsule filled with copper sulfate powder is integrated into the side of the case. As long as that capsule is pale blue, the interior is dry. If moisture enters the watch, the capsule slowly turns dark green, signaling that it is time for a service. Third, special elastomer seals prevent ambient moisture from entering the case in the first place.

The Kult Chronographs: Sinn 103 and 157

While the engineering marvels get the patent awards, the traditional chronographs keep collectors hooked. The Sinn 103 is the spiritual successor to the brand’s 1960s roots. Featuring a bidirectional countdown bezel, pump pushers, and a domed acrylic or sapphire crystal, it is the quintessential pilot chronograph. It lacks the corporate sheen of a Breitling Navitimer, leaning instead into a pure, utilitarian aesthetic that looks best on a worn-out distressed leather strap or a heavy NATO.

The Sinn 157, and its spiritual descendants, takes a different path. Built into a tonneau-shaped case with integrated lugs, it strips away the external bezel for a clean, instrument-panel look. Astronaut Reinhard Furrer wore a Sinn 157 during the D1 Spacelab mission in 1985, proving that these watches could handle the vacuum of space just as well as the cockpit of a Tornado fighter jet. These models prove that Sinn did not abandon its functional roots when it embraced modern materials.
