
Why Modern Bezels Are Ceramic
The IWC Aquatimer 3536, released in 1982, was one of the first watches to feature a ceramic bezel. It wasn’t just a marketing angle—it was a practical breakthrough that would eventually change how luxury brands approached bezel design. By 2007, when Rolex switched the GMT-Master II 116710 to ceramic, it became clear this wasn’t a fad. Today, if a bezel isn’t ceramic, there’s usually a reason: cost, heritage, or brand philosophy.
Why ceramic beats steel and aluminum
The difference hits you the moment you compare them side by side. Ceramic rates around 1200 Vickers in hardness, compared to stainless steel’s 200 and aluminum’s pathetic 90. Put simply: a ceramic bezel laughs off scratches that would gouge aluminum or scuff steel. You can bang it against a rock, a desk corner, or a boat rail, and it stays crisp. Aluminum, by contrast, dents like soft butter and shows every ding within a month of regular wear.
UV resistance is where ceramic really shines. An Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean left in a sunny drawer for years? The ceramic bezel keeps its original color. An aluminum bezel under the same conditions? You’ll get a washed-out, milky appearance that no amount of polishing restores. The dye fades into the material itself. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
The manufacturing process
Ceramic bezels aren’t baked in a kiln like pottery. The standard material is zirconium oxide (zirconia), powder-compressed under pressures that would crush a human instantly, then sintered at approximately 1,500°C. This creates a micro-crystalline structure so dense that oil, salt water, and UV radiation barely penetrate. Some brands add color-matched dyes to the powder before sintering, which is why you get perfect color consistency. It doesn’t fade from the surface—it’s uniform throughout the material.
Panerai’s Submersible BMG-TECH goes further, using ceramic for the entire case, not just the bezel. That took serious investment in manufacturing, which is why it costs what it does. But it proved ceramic could handle the whole application, not just the rotating insert.
Real-world durability in daily wear
The key test: will it scratch in actual use? For most owners, no. A ceramic bezel survives desk bumps, car door frames, and gym sessions without visible marks. The Seiko Prospex line, which moved to ceramic bezels across their dive watches, proved this works at the $400 price point too. Their customers report bezels that still look factory-fresh after years.
The real danger is impact damage—a sharp blow from the right angle can chip or crack ceramic. It’s rare, but it happens. Drop a watch with a ceramic bezel on concrete from waist height, and you might see a small chip. Drop it the same way onto a carpeted floor? Completely fine. The material doesn’t absorb shock the way aluminum does. This is the trade-off.

How major brands implemented it
Rolex started with the GMT-Master II in 2007, then rolled ceramic to the Submariner and Daytona. Not because they had to—they could have stuck with aluminum. They did it because ceramic is objectively better for the customer, and Rolex’s customers expect the best solution, not the cheapest one. Omega followed suit across the Seamaster family. Tudor, their sister brand, also switched by 2020.
Interestingly, some vintage-focused brands kept aluminum longer. Seiko’s vintage homage models shipped aluminum bezels for years before switching. The reason: authenticity to the original. Some collectors prefer the slight imperfection of a period-correct aluminum bezel.
The cost and repairability problem
Ceramic bezels are expensive to replace. A factory-fresh bezel for a Rolex Submariner runs $500 to $700. An Omega Seamaster? $400 to $600. For brands like Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet, it’s worse. You’re looking at $800 to $1,200 for a complete bezel unit.
The problem isn’t the material itself—zirconia is cheap. It’s the tooling, precision fitting, and color-matching that costs money. Bezels aren’t interchangeable. A GMT-Master II bezel won’t fit a Submariner case. Each model has its own specifications. Unlike aluminum, which can be re-anodized in-house by skilled technicians, ceramic bezels usually require sending the watch to the manufacture. No indie watchmaker is making ceramic replacements in their garage.
Maintenance and longevity
Ceramic bezels require almost no care. They don’t corrode. Salt water doesn’t touch them. You don’t need to oil them or polish them with special compounds. Just rinse with fresh water after the beach and you’re done.
The only real enemy is thermal shock. Extreme temperature swings can stress ceramic. If you wear a watch in an icy environment and then immediately run it under warm water, you could theoretically cause micro-cracking. In practice, this almost never happens unless you’re deliberately abusing the watch. Normal temperature swings—walking from an air-conditioned office to a hot car—won’t touch it.
After a decade, a well-maintained ceramic bezel will look nearly identical to day one. The material simply doesn’t degrade the way organic materials do. This is why ceramic is the future standard. It costs more upfront, but over the life of the watch, it delivers better value than cheaper alternatives.
