Watch Water Resistance: What The Numbers Mean


In 1926, Rolex created the Oyster. Mercedes Gleitze, a German swimmer, strapped one to her wrist and swam the English Channel. The watch came out ticking. It was a marketing stunt, yes, but it proved something fundamental: mechanical waterproofing was possible. Today, that principle underlies every water-resistant watch sold—from a €200 Seiko SKX007 to a €10,000 Rolex Submariner. The engineering hasn’t fundamentally changed. What has changed is precision.

Understanding Water Resistance Ratings

A watch’s water-resistance rating is measured in meters (or feet, or atmospheres—the label depends on the market). The number tells you how deep the watch will survive in static water, with no pressure variations, no vibration, and no assumptions about actual use. That last part is critical. A Rolex Submariner rated to 300 meters doesn’t mean you can dive to 300 meters. It means it survived a test where a static water column of 300 meters of pressure was applied to a sealed case.

The ISO 2281 standard governs these tests. A watch is placed in a pressure chamber. Static water is applied at the rated depth for 10 seconds. The pressure is released. The watch is inspected for internal moisture. If it’s dry, it passes. Simple. But wildly divorced from real water exposure, which involves splashing, wrist motion, temperature changes, and shock.

A Seiko Presage with a 10-bar (100-meter) rating has passed this test. A vintage Seiko 5 with a 50-meter rating has as well. Neither of these watches should be submerged in actual water below a few meters, despite their ratings. The 100 or 50 is a pressure number, not a depth permission slip.

Gaskets and Sealing: The Actual Hardware

Water-resistance is enforced by gaskets—thin rings of rubber or silicone inserted at every potential leak point. The case back gasket is the primary seal. The crown gasket prevents water from entering through the stem. The crystal gasket seats the sapphire or acrylic lens in the bezel. A Rolex Submariner ref. 14060 has gaskets on the crown, the case back, the crown tube, the crystal, and the helium escape valve.

Each gasket degrades over time. Rubber hardens. Silicone compresses. A 1970s Rolex Submariner gasket that hasn’t been replaced in 50 years is probably just a compressed sliver, offering almost no sealing function. This is why even a robust dive watch like the Omega Seamaster Professional requires a pressure test and gasket replacement every 5–7 years if actually used in water.

The most overlooked gasket is the crown. Spin it carelessly, and you can misalign the seal. A screw-down crown, like those on the Seiko SKX007 and Rolex Submariner, is mechanistically superior—the mechanical engagement prevents accidental opening. A pull-out crown, like on a Seiko Presage or Tissot PRX, relies entirely on correct hand positioning. A watch with a pull-crown at 100 meters is fine until someone forgets to push it back in completely.

Case Design: Unibody vs. Gasket-Only

Modern dive watches generally follow one of two approaches. Unibody (or monoblock) cases machine the case from a single piece of steel, with the back cap and crown integral. This is expensive and rare. The Tudor Pelagos uses a unibody case. So does the IWC Big Pilot. The sealing advantage is obvious—fewer separate parts mean fewer gasket junctions.

More common is the conventional design: case, separate back cap, crown, and crystal, each requiring its own gasket. This is cheaper to produce and easier to service. The Rolex Submariner ref. 16610 uses this design. So does nearly every diver’s watch under €5,000.

Both approaches work. A Tudor Pelagos at 300 meters is no more waterproof than a Rolex Submariner at 300 meters. The unibody design is marginally more robust in theory, but in practice, a well-serviced conventional watch is just as reliable.

Helium Escape Valves: For Professionals Only

A helium escape valve is a one-way mechanism on the case that releases internal helium gas during decompression. Why? Professional saturation divers work in mixed-gas environments. Helium is small enough to diffuse through rubber gaskets. If a diver is in a pressurized chamber at 500 meters for days, helium permeates the movement. When the diver decompresses, that helium must escape. Without a valve, the pressure differential can blow the crystal out of the watch.

The Rolex Deepsea has a helium escape valve. The Omega Seamaster Professional has one. The Seiko SKX007 doesn’t need one—recreational diving doesn’t reach saturation depths. A helium valve is engineering for a specific professional use case, not a general improvement to water-resistance.

Degradation and Maintenance

Waterproofing degrades with use and time. A brand-new Seiko Diver’s 200m watch will easily handle a recreational dive to 40 meters. The same watch at 10 years old, never serviced, might leak at 30 meters if the gaskets have compressed. A Rolex Submariner that’s been used in saltwater quarterly for 20 years without maintenance will develop internal corrosion issues.

The cure is straightforward: pressure testing and gasket replacement every 3–5 years for watches used in water, every 7–10 years for watches worn casually. A professional service includes removing the crystal, back case, and crown, inspecting each gasket, replacing what’s degraded, and running a pressure test to verify the new seal. This costs €200–€400 for a standard dive watch.

Practical Water Ratings for Actual Users

30 meters (3 atm): Splash-resistant. Suitable for everyday wear, handwashing, light rain. Not for showers or submersion.

50 meters (5 atm): As above, plus incidental water contact. Safe for showers. Not for snorkeling or diving.

100 meters (10 atm): Safe for swimming and snorkeling. Not for diving. This is the effective limit for most non-professional water activities. A Seiko Presage at 100 meters is genuinely versatile.

200 meters (20 atm): Suitable for recreational diving. A Seiko SKX007 at 200 meters is legitimate. Your average dive operator will accept it.

300 meters (30 atm): Professional dive watch standard. A Rolex Submariner at 300 meters is overkill for most divers but reassuring in its over-engineering.

1000+ meters: Deep technical diving or marketing. Choose your watch accordingly.
