The hairspring is the critical component. This impossibly thin coiled metal spring, paired with the balance wheel, controls everything about the watch’s timekeeping. The hairspring vibrates at a precise frequency—thousands of times per second depending on the movement. The escapement releases energy in precise increments controlled by this oscillation. If the hairspring is too tight or too loose in its spiral, the frequency changes and the watch gains or loses time.
Temperature affects the hairspring too. Metal expands and contracts with temperature changes. A watch running fast in winter might run slow in summer because the hairspring slightly expanded. This is why high-end movements use special alloys—Invar, glucydur, Nivarox—that minimize thermal expansion. But even these are affected. A well-regulated watch should be adjusted to keep time across a typical temperature range, not just at room temperature.
The Tools and the Reality Check
A proper timing machine is essential if you’re going to regulate. The Regulation Process: The Theory
The process varies by movement, but the principle is consistent. You open the case, extract the movement, and place it in a movement holder. Most watches are regulated in two or three positions—dial up, dial down, and sometimes at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions.
If the watch is running fast, you need to lengthen the hairspring slightly. This makes the oscillation slower and thus the rate slower. If it’s running slow, you shorten the hairspring. Others will explain what they’re adjusting and why. You’ll learn far more from watching an expert work carefully than attempting it yourself without training.

But even then, expect to invest not just in tools but in education—books, online courses, mentorship. Regulation is simple in principle and complex in practice.
