Grand Seiko Spring Drive: The Movement With No Tick


Watch the seconds hand on a Grand Seiko Spring Drive and something feels wrong, in a good way: it doesn’t tick. It glides, continuously, the way a quartz sweep hand does but powered entirely by a mainspring. That effect took engineer Yoshikazu Akahane nearly three decades to deliver.

A problem stated in 1977, solved in 1998

Akahane joined Seiko in 1977 and set himself the goal of building a mechanical watch with quartz-level accuracy but no battery. The idea sat unbuilt for years because the core challenge, regulating a mainspring’s release electronically without a battery to power the electronics, had no obvious answer. Seiko’s own solid-state R&D didn’t produce a working prototype until the mid-1990s, and the first Spring Drive wristwatch, the limited hand-wound Credor Sonoregi, arrived in 1999. The first automatic Spring Drive Grand Seiko followed in 2004.

How the Tri-synchro Regulator actually works

A conventional mechanical watch releases energy through an escapement and balance wheel, which is what produces the tick, and each tick introduces tiny timing errors. Spring Drive keeps the mainspring and gear train but replaces the escapement with a “glide wheel,” a rotor spun by the mainspring’s torque. That glide wheel powers a tiny integrated circuit and quartz crystal, which in turn regulate the glide wheel’s speed using electromagnetic braking, no physical contact, no lubrication needed at that interface. Seiko calls the whole assembly the Tri-synchro Regulator because it converts mechanical, electrical, and electromagnetic energy in one continuous loop.

The numbers that justify the hype

Caliber 9R65 and its successors are rated at +-1 second per day, roughly 10 times more accurate than a COSC-certified mechanical chronometer, while still running on a hand-wound or automatic mainspring with about 72 hours of power reserve. There’s no battery to replace, ever, unlike quartz.

Built in one town in Iwate

Every Spring Drive movement is assembled at the Shizukuishi Watch Studio, a facility Seiko built specifically for high-end movement production in Iwate Prefecture, in the mountains of northern Japan. Grand Seiko separated from the wider Seiko brand as its own standalone marque in 2017, partly to let watches like the Spring Drive Snowflake (SBGA211), whose dial texture mimics the region’s snowfall, stand on their own internationally rather than in Seiko’s shadow.

Why it never fully replaced the escapement

Spring Drive remains a Grand Seiko and Credor exclusive rather than a company-wide standard, largely because the movements are expensive to produce by hand in low volume. Grand Seiko still sells conventional mechanical calibers like the 9S65 alongside Spring Drive and quartz 9F models, letting collectors pick their preferred relationship with the second hand.
