Pull the crown on a Seiko SKX007—the watch countless people mistakenly cite as the definitive “hacking watch”—and the seconds hand doesn’t even pause; it keeps sweeping uninterrupted. That’s not a design flaw in the SKX. The 7S26 movement was deliberately engineered without hacking or hand-winding capability to minimize parts count and manufacturing cost. Hacking is a real, specific mechanical feature with genuine military origins, and whether your watch has it changes everything about how precisely you can set the time. Most casual watch owners don’t understand what hacking is or why it matters, but the people who actually use their watches for time-critical tasks have learned to care deeply.

What Hacking Physically Does

The term “hacking” refers to the complete stopping of the balance wheel—the oscillating component that keeps a mechanical movement running—the instant you pull the crown outward to the time-setting position. Mechanically, a small lever, connected directly to the crown-setting mechanism, physically contacts either the balance wheel itself or the hairspring (the spiral metal piece that controls the wheel’s oscillation) and forcefully halts all motion. This creates an audible or tactile stop—the watch literally freezes mid-tick.

Without hacking, the seconds hand continues its continuous sweep while you’re rotating the hour and minute hands to set the time. This creates an impossible situation: you can align the minute hand to the correct minute, but the seconds hand is still moving, so you’ll always be off by some amount—typically anywhere from immediately ahead to nearly a full second late. The practical result is you give up and set it “close enough,” which for most people doesn’t matter. For timekeeping on a schedule, it becomes frustrating.

With hacking, you stop the oscillation, then rotate the hands until the seconds hand points precisely at 12 (the zero position). Now you can synchronize to an external time reference down to the exact second. The World War II Military Specification

The feature originates from a specific wartime need. The U.S. Army Air Forces’ A-11 specification, issued to American manufacturers including Hamilton, Waltham, and Elgin in the early 1940s, mandated hacking seconds as a non-negotiable requirement. Why? Because pilots and navigators conducting long-distance bombing missions relied on precise celestial navigation using sextants and astronomical tables. Before a coordinated bombing run, aircrew would synchronize their watches to master clocks down to the second. If one navigator’s watch was a second fast and another’s was a second slow, dead-reckoning calculations would compound, and the formation would drift off course. For a bombing raid meant to hit a specific target with precision, that mattered enormously.

Similarly, the German Kriegsmarine’s deck watches and the Luftwaffe’s B-Uhr pilot chronographs included hacking seconds for the same reason. The Swiss military also adopted the feature in their official issue pieces. By the end of the war, hacking was recognized as a feature of seriousness—a signal that a watch was meant for actual mission work, not casual timekeeping.

Which Modern Movements Actually Include Hacking

This is where watch mythology encounters uncomfortable reality. The Seiko SKX007, marketed for decades as a rugged dive watch and worn by countless watch enthusiasts, does not hack. Its 7S26 caliber—a fully automatic, self-winding movement with no manual wind option—deliberately omitted both hacking and the ability to wind the spring by hand. This was a cost decision. Adding hacking requires an additional lever mechanism and additional assembly labor. Seiko chose to eliminate it to keep the SKX at an affordable price point. It’s honest cost-cutting, not deception, but it’s worth knowing.

Later Seiko movements in the same family tell a different story. The NH35 and NH36, which succeeded the 7S26, both include hacking seconds and hand-winding capability. Seiko’s higher-tier 6R15, 6R35, and their Marine Master offerings all hack. If you’re buying a Seiko specifically for hacking, check the movement number. Don’t assume based on the model’s reputation.

The ETA 2824-2, the three-hand automatic that powers hundreds of microbrands from Steinhart to Farer to countless Kickstarter projects, has included hacking since it debuted. That’s why so many “affordable” mechanical watches advertise hacking—it’s practically standard on that movement.

Rolex’s in-house calibers got the feature late. The 1570 and 1560 automatics did not hack. Starting with the 3135 in 1988, Rolex added hacking to every automatic they’ve produced. The modern Submariner, Daytona, GMT-Master—all hack. The Sea-Dweller Deepsea reference 116660 hacks. But if you’re buying a Rolex from the 1970s or early 1980s, expect it not to.

Omega went all-in on hacking with their co-axial movement line. From the 8500 series onward, hacking is standard. Miyota’s reliable 9015 movement, found in many Japanese microbrands, includes hacking. Patek Philippe’s in-house calibers have hacking on their sport models; the dress-watch Calatrava 5127 does not (by design philosophy—it’s a dress piece where seconds precision is less relevant).

The Practical Value Debate

In the modern era of atomic time and smartphones syncing to network time servers, does hacking matter? Most watch owners? No. But the statement is incomplete. If you’re setting your watch against a reference source you can see and time-code to—say, your phone showing network time, or WWV radio broadcasts, or a GPS chronometer—hacking is the difference between synchronization and approximation. Set your watch without hacking, and you’re off by a quarter-second or more. Set it with hacking, and you’re synchronized within a single tick.

For people who dive, hacking becomes more meaningful. Dive logs are recorded in time. If you’re tracking your bottom time with your watch, one second per dive doesn’t matter. But if you’re coordinating with dive computers that timestamp events, or if you’re logging multiple dives per day and need to understand timing across dives, synchronized watches matter. The Rolex Submariner’s hacking function isn’t there for show; it’s a remnant of tool-watch philosophy where precision mattered operationally.

For pilots, watch hacking is still a consideration, though modern flight navigation is electronic. For scientists, researchers, and anyone doing time-based data collection, it’s a small but real advantage.

For the rest of us? It’s a nice feature that occasionally proves useful and makes setting the time feel more satisfying. There’s something tactile and satisfying about that mechanical stop, the sense that you’ve actually seized control of timekeeping for a moment.

The Correct Procedure for Setting a Hacking Watch

First, pull the crown outward to the second click position (the time-setting detent, distinct from the first click used for hand-winding). The seconds hand should stop immediately. If it continues moving, your watch doesn’t hack—accept it and set it as best you can.

With the seconds hand now stationary, rotate the hour hand and minute hand to the desired time, positioning the seconds hand so it points at 12 (zero seconds).

Now wait. Have your time reference visible—a phone with atomic time, a radio time broadcast, a cesium clock if you’re that dedicated. Wait for that reference to show the exact minute and zero seconds that matches your watch. The moment it displays your target time, push the crown back in. Your watch is now synchronized to the second.

This procedure is the reason military watches specified hacking, and it’s why high-end watches include it even though most owners will never use it correctly.

Checking Before You Buy

If a watch’s marketing material emphasizes hacking—especially an older watch or a military-themed model—verify it by looking up the actual caliber name and number.
